Mario Kart 8 Deluxe outsells the NES/Famicom install base
The game can't be stopped
In recent years, an argument has been made about Mario Kart being Nintendo’s most important franchise. Sure, there are plenty of other big-name IP under Nintendo’s belt, but nothing else has the staying power and reach of Mario Kart. If you want more proof of that, we’ve got the perfect random stat for you.
As it stands according to Nintendo’s latest financial report, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold a whopping 61.97 million units worldwide. No other game on Switch has sold that much, and there’s no chance anything will catch that total. Even crazier, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has plenty of life left in it, as it still pops up regularly in the top 10 and 20 monthly software sales charts worldwide.
What makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s 61.97 million units sold even more impressive? Well, during its entire run on the market, the combined sales of the NES and Famicom reached 61.91 million units worldwide. Yes, you read that correctly. That means Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a single game, moved more units than Nintendo’s breakthrough home console.
It’s no surprise to see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe surpass total sales of platforms like the Wii U or Virtual Boy, but when you consider just how important and far-reaching the NES was, it’s wild to see Nintendo come up with a single game that blew by its sales total.
