Leave it to Nintendo to sneak in some changes in region-specific game art. While you’ve no doubt seen the key art for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it turns out Nintendo has updated that artwork for Japanese audiences, and there’s some new discoveries worth pointing out.

As spotted by Stealth on Twitter/X, , there are three big differences between the Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Japanese key art and the art in other regions. Most interesting of all has to be the little guy in the upper left-hand corner of the artwork, as he is seen paragliding above Hyrule. There’s no doubt this character will be involved in a mini-game at the very least, but perhaps he could be a tease of yet another gameplay mechanic Zelda will be able to take advantage of.

Along with that comes some fun elements spotted on the right-hand side of the art. First up is a snake enemy that we haven’t seen in artwork yet, and there’s also a wanted poster with a rather funny-looking version of Zelda displayed. It’s clear the bad guys are out to stop Zelda from setting things right, so they’re spreading the word with their crude rendition of the princess.

The Sonic brand certainly has a legacy in the world of videogames, but fans know the I.P. reaches much further than that. While Sonic-themed movies are a huge portion of the pie in recent years, the world of Sonic has also been brought to life in comics for decades now. That trend is set to continue soon in Japan, but Sonic won’t be the main player this time out.

It’s been revealed that a Shadow the Hedgehog manga is in the works, and it’s set to make its debut in CoroCoro Comics’ October 2024 issue. If you’re looking for more details on this manga, you’ll unfortunately have to wait patiently, as no other information on the series has been shared at this time.

Obviously, the timing on this manga isn’t mere coincidence, as Sonic X Shadow Generations is heading to Switch October 25th, 2024. It’s clear SEGA is trying to raise the profile of this game, especially with Japanese audiences. Going with a manga in CoroCoro Comics is certainly a way to grab some attention, and hopefully it’ll sway some people to go all-in on the Sonic series.

Composer Rich Vreeland, better known as Disasterpeace, has an unmistakable style, which is why he’s so sought after for game soundtracks. Vreeland has tackled the soundtracks to Fez, Hyper Light Drifter, Runner2, plus countless other titles. Vreeland has also turned to the world of film, composing for movies like It Follows, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and more.

While Vreeland may be pulling double duty nowadays on games and movies, his composing career started exclusively in gaming. In an interview with Polygon, we learn that it was the work of another great game composer that convinced him to try things for himself.

**One example that comes to mind is the soundtrack of Chrono Cross. My foray into game music was heavily motivated by my rediscovery of the music of the games I played growing up.

There was something unique about Yasunori Mitsuda’s music — the way he combines contemporary influences with world styles… just in that one game I can hear Celtic sounds and melodies, folk influences, patterns that remind me of the minimalist Steve Reich, and complex time signatures like you might hear in Fusion or Prog Rock. It’s a pretty rich tapestry of things, and I found the music extremely unique and memorable at the time I first played the game back when I was about 13 or 14 years old. It still stands out and has some of the most unusual and beautiful chord progressions you will ever hear in a game.**

Publisher Bandai Namco recently confirmed that SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream will see worldwide release on Switch come Oct. 4th, 2024. Following that news, a fresh trailer has dropped as well. Lisbeth, the cheery blacksmith, is geared to crush, bash, and smash. Watch as Lisbeth forges to victory in SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream!

SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream has been confirmed to be a cross-platform compatible game with no loot boxes, and it supports up-to-20-player co-op. The dev team specifically set out to test cross-platform and online co-op functionality to make sure they could get everything working perfectly on all platforms, and obviously those tests were a success.

Following the recent beta test, the devs also noted some changes that will be implemented in the final game. In the final release, you’ll be able to turn automatic lock-on off, Goddess Statues will appear, difficulty will be based on how many players you’re with, and offline Story Mode and online Free Mode will be available. Last but not least, another beta test could happen at some point.

In SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream, a new system is applied to the world of Alfheim Online, but a malfunction causes all worlds and timelines to collide, creating a unique setting and challenging environment for Kirito and other players. All lost in uncharted territory, enemies become allies, departed characters are back and unlikely alliances will be formed to survive the dangers in this unsettled world.

SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream offers an original story in an All-Star game, focused on a large-scale co-op experience. Players will enjoy playing their favourite characters from the first three seasons of the animated series and Sword Art Online movies, in a cross-play battle action game featuring thrilling boss raids and co-op quests.

Digital Eclipse has been cranking out some really interesting content lately. We’ve seen the studio create what are basically digital, playable history lessons with The Making of Karateka and Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story. There’s no doubt Digital Eclipse will be putting out more projects in the same vein, but some of those might be tough to achieve on Switch.

In an interview with VGC, Digital Eclipse’s Chris Kohler spoke about emulating older platforms for these museum-style games. While the Switch can keep up with things now, doing similar projects for games that released on later hardware make the situation a bit tough on Switch.

And so we kind of top out with modern hardware, especially with – I love you Nintendo, but – with the Nintendo Switch, it’s getting on in years and it’s more difficult to emulate later platforms and have them be performant on the Switch. And so, there is a little bit of a division there in terms of what we’re doing.

[Chris Kohler, Digital Eclipse]

Digital Eclipse will obviously have more museum-style collection games to offer in the future, but could there ever be a chance of working with Nintendo to create a project? While nothing is official at this point, Kohler does see a slight window of opportunity for such a collab.

Well, you know, historically, Other Ocean [who previously owned Digital Eclipse] did Minecraft 3DS Edition for Nintendo, and we’ve done stuff with Nintendo as a company historically in the past. So I don’t think the door is closed, so you know, we’ll see what the future will bring. But certainly nothing is in development at this time.
