Original Super Smash Bros. N64 storyboard art surfaces online
A smash from the past
It’s rare that we get to see too many behind the scenes goodies from Nintendo games, but today we’re in for a treat! A set of original storyboard art for Super Smash Bros. on the N64 has just surfaced online. The art was discovered by David V. Kimball, who was able to dig it up on HAL’s old web site via the Internet Archive.
One of the coolest thing about this art is that it was created by none other than Masahiro Sakurai himself. You can see how the art outlines the game’s opening cut scene, complete with notes and direction in Japanese. Check out all the uncovered pieces below:
In addition, GameXplain has gone ahead and put together a video comparing the storyboards to the completed version of the cut scene. To see exactly how the devs progressed from the original art to the final project, you can watch that video here:

8d agoThis is perfection! What a blast to see the origins of one of the best games ever made. Playing as Samus and Capn. Falcon made me want to play Metroid and F-Zero for the first time. Thank you Sakurai for all you've given us.
