Long-running gaming magazine Game Informer shuts down
Good night, sweet prince
An announcement shared on the official Game Informer Twitter account has informed us that the publication is shutting down after thirty-three years of business. Game Informer has been the official magazine of US retailer GameStop since 1991.
The shutdown apparently took Game Informer staffers by surprise, as Kotaku reports that employees were suddenly informed during a Friday meeting with the Gamestop Vice President of HR. The entire staff was laid off during the meeting. Some of those employees took to Twitter to express their frustration with the situation, including video producer Ben Hanson, who calls the farewell statement issued “phony/empty”. Content director Kyle Hilliard laments that the next issue was about 70% done and would have had “a GREAT cover”.
In the course of thirty-three years, Game Informer published countless gaming news stories, previews, reviews, and more, including plenty of Nintendo coverage. GameStop has not commented on why exactly they’re shutting the publication down now, but presumably it has to do with a desire for increased profits. Gaming magazines have already been dwindling for several years now, but this does feel like the end of an era.
It remains to be seen if any of Game Informer’s previously posted articles and content will resurface. As of now, the Game Informer web site simply redirects to the farewell statement, which you can view below:
After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer.
From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on.
Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.

4d agoThis sucks. Hopefully all the staff are able to find new jobs quickly.
Also, I signed up for a 2-year subscription when they recently started doing stand-alone subscriptions. Hopefully, I'll get a refund for the remaining time.

4d agoCan we maybe stop inflating GameStop's stock price? If they were ever worth the meme stock affection, they're certainly not now.

4d agoI've been reading the German magazine N-Zone for 25 years now and seeing how the it changed in the last few years I expect them to shut down sooner or later too. Maybe they'll go digital-only first but that would put me off for sure and many other as well I presume.
